The double bass is the largest and lowest-pitched member of the string family. It has the longest strings, which means it can play very low notes.
A full-size double bass is around 180cm high. The double bass sets the rhythmic and harmonic foundation for the orchestra.
Like other string instruments, the left hand presses down on the strings to alter the pitch, while the right hand moves the bow or plucks the strings.
Because it is so tall, the double bass is played either sitting on a high stool, or standing. The instrument stands on a metal peg and leans against the player’s body.
The strings on a double bass, violin, viola and cello are stretched over a narrow piece of
carved wood called the ‘bridge’.
