A modern orchestra has 80 to 100 musicians. They need a leader to direct the musical traffic!
Conductors are called ‘maestro’ or ‘maestra’, which is Italian for ‘master’. They’re very good musicians themselves, often playing multiple instruments before becoming a conductor.
The conductor stands on a podium, where they can be seen by the whole orchestra. They direct the musicians in the orchestra to play louder or softer, faster or slower. In rehearsals, a conductor uses their own interpretation to bring the music to life.
