The flute is a member of the woodwind family. It makes a light, clear and strong sound.
The flute player uses their fingers to press buttons and keys along the metal tube to change the pitch.
Flutes were traditionally made from wood, but modern flutes are made out of metal. There are many different names for a musician who plays the flute, including ‘flautist’, ‘flutist’ or ‘fluter’.
The shorter version of the flute is called the ‘piccolo’, which is Italian for ‘small’.
